Summary

The 2003 National Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (NRVA) studied the needs and vulnerabilities of rural populations and nomadic farmers (Kuchi) in all 32 provinces of Afghanistan. The 2003 NRVA sampled various agro-ecological zones (by land area) and selected households within those zones (by wealth group). Subsequent surveys including the 2005 NRVA used population-based sampling. Questionnaires were administered at the district, shura, wealth group, and household level. The survey occurred in each village 2 to 4 weeks after the main summer harvest, and it collected data from 11,757 households. Topics included household consumption, agricultural activities, and coping strategies to shocks, such as natural disasters.
