Summary

The National Sample Survey (NSS) is a socioeconomic survey conducted in annual rounds with a cycle of rotating topics. The 56th Round (July 2000 to June 2001) included surveys of household consumer expenditure and the unorganized manufacturing system.

Samples were 21,649 rural and 35,624 urban households for the consumer expenditure survey and 152,494 enterprises for the manufacturing survey. The surveys were constructed to be representative at the national and state levels, excluding select areas due to geographic remoteness.

The unorganized manufacturing sector survey collected data on unorganized manufacturing enterprises, including number of enterprises, employment, fixed assets, operating expenses, receipts, loans, number of workers, etc.
