The second Mexico Contraceptive Prevalence Survey, conducted from September-December 1979, surveys women aged 15-49 years on general demographic characteristics, contraceptive use, maternal and child care and mortality, and fertility.

The sample design is composed of three parts: the metropolitan areas of Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara; municipalities with 100,000 or more inhabitants (excluding the metro areas); and the remaining municipalities.

The sample is further split by use of two different questionnaires, one on contraceptive prevalence and the other on child and maternal care. Both share questions on housing and demographics, fertility, and mortality. In total, 18,496 households and 20,481 women are sampled, with 15,279 women receiving the contraceptive prevalence questionnaire and 5,202 women receiving the child and maternal care questionnaire.
