Summary 

Beginning in 1998, the Survey of Household Spending, or SHS, replaced both the Family Expenditure Survey and the Household Facilities and Equipment Survey.

For this year data was collected in the beginning of 2003 for the reference period of 2002 and the sample was 20,861 households.

Institutional populations, residents of Indian reservations, and official representatives of foreign countries were excluded from the survey. Residents of the territories were also excluded in this year.
