The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The interviewed sample for the 2009 NHIS consisted of 33,856 households, yielding 88,446 persons in 34,640 families.
The 2009 NHIS covered a wide variety of topics, such as family composition, socio-demographic characteristics, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, health conditions, health behaviors, physical activity. The survey included supplement sections on stroke, arthritis, health information technology, carbon monoxide detection, child mental health, and immunization.
