The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The interviewed sample for the 2008 NHIS consisted of 28,790 households, yielding 74,236 persons in 29,421 families.
The 2008 NHIS covered a wide variety of topics, such as family composition, socio-demographic characteristics, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, conditions, health behaviors, physical activity. The survey included supplement sections concerning adult heart disease, adult and child asthma, adult and child vision, cancer screening and sun protection, human papillomavirus, child and adult oral health, balance, child mental health, and adult and child immunization.
