The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The interviewed sample for the 2000 NHIS consisted of 38,633 households, yielding 100,618 persons in 39,264 families.
The questionnaires included in the basic module of the 2000 NHIS cover a wide variety of topics, such as household composition, socio-demographic characteristics, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, conditions, health behaviors, physical activity, and immunizations. The 2000 NHIS also included a cancer module that consisted of seven sections: Hispanic acculturation, diet and nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, cancer screening, genetic testing, and family history.
