The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The interviewed sample for the 1999 NHIS consisted of 37,573 households, yielding 97,059 persons in 38,171 families.
The questionnaires included in the basic module of the 1999 NHIS cover a wide variety of topics, such as household composition, socio-demographic characteristics, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, conditions, health behaviors, physical activity, and immunizations.
