The United States National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) was established in 1999 to monitor the impact of tobacco control policies and programs among middle school and high school students. The data collected in the survey also supplements other surveys, including the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. The 2018 survey was conducted in the Spring, and used a self-administered questionnaire to collect information on tobacco-related indicators from students in grades 6-8, and 9-12, including tobacco use, electronic cigarette use, secondhand smoke exposure, access to tobacco, and knowledge of tobacco in the media. The final sample produced 170 participating schools and 22,806 students completing the questionnaires for an overrall survey response rate of 72 percent.
