The Kenya Standardized Monitoring and Assessment in Relief and Transition (SMART) surveys were conducted to assess malnutrition prevalence in children. Data were collected on mortality, anthropometry, vitamin A supplements, maternal health care, and food consumption.

For the 2011 survey in Isiolo county, household interviews were conducted in April of that year using a two-stage cluster sampling method. Children ages 6-59 months were sampled for anthropometry, while those ages 0-6 months were included in the Infant and Young Child feeding (IYCF) survey.
