Summary

Censuses provide population numbers, household or family size and composition, and information on sex and age distribution. They often include other demographic, economic and health-related topics as well. The 1991 Brazil de jure census collected data through face-to-face interviews on plumbing, housing conditions and size, family composition, income, educational attainment and occupations. Questions regarding occupations included not only the occupation of the individual, but characteristics of the employer such as location and number of employees. The census day was September 1, 1991 and fieldwork continued until December 1. A differentially weighted sample of approximately 5.8% of private households from the census (8,522,740 individuals) is available through IPUMS International at the University of Minnesota. Refer to the IPUMS website for guidelines on citing database versions.
