Summary
This survey on food fortification and micronutrient deficiencies was specifically intended to assess the impact of the flour fortification program, started in 1997 and the salt iodization program, started in 1996. It also looked at vitamin A and iron status. The survey had the aim of providing data for improving nutrition programs, and the reports included specific recommendations. It was conducted by the Ministry of Health with assistance from the CDC, EMRO and UNICEF. Populations covered included children from 6 mos to 5 years, nonpregnant women 15-49 and men 18-60. Foods assessed were flour, salt and cooking oils. It also included an assessment of flours used in bakeries.
