Summary

The Panama Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness 2012-2014 aimed to determine the prevalence of blindness and vision impairment, and its causes among the population 50 years and older in the country. The survey was conducted following the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness methodology. For the sampling, 50 respondents 50 years of age and older were selected from 84 randomly selected nationally representative geographical units. Participants were administered visual acuity tests using Snellen Charts, and eye lens and posterior pole examinations through direct ophthalmoscopy. The study also looked at the coverage and quality of cataract surgery among the population as well as outcomes, access, and barriers to the surgery. A total of 4,125 respondents participated in the survey.
