The Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) is a rapid survey methodology developed at the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH). It is a population based survey of visual impairment and eye care services among people aged 50 years and over.
The India - Surat Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness 2011 covered the region of Surat in Gujarat state. Of the targeted sample size, 2,137 subjects were examined successfully. Data were collected through household interviews and visual examinations. Subjects with vision-impairing cataract were questioned on barriers keeping them from pursuing cataract surgery, and subjects that had undergone cataract surgery were asked about their operations. An additional module collected information on willingness to pay for cataract surgery.
