Summary

The Intentional Search and Reclassification of Maternal Deaths project, also known as BIRMM, began in 2002. It investigates deaths in women ages 10 to 54 and it identifies maternal deaths that may have been incorrectly attributed to a subset of causes. BIRMM obtains death records from the Epidemiological and Statistical Mortality System (SEED) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), as well as death certificates, medical records, verbal autopsies, and live births data. After all details pertaining to these deaths are analyzed, some of them are reclassified as direct, indirect, non-maternal or late maternal deaths.
