Summary

Two cross-sectional household surveys were conducted in Iraq in 1999 to measure the levels and trends of child mortality over the past 20 years by region and to generate estimates for maternal mortality. One survey covered the 15 governorates in the populous southern part of the country, while the other survey was carried out in the three northern autonomous governorates in the province of Kurdistan.

Altogether 23,978 ever married women of ages 15 to 45 years in the south and 16,499 women in Kurdistan were successfully interviewed using a structured questionnaire that was developed from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) questionnaire. The questionnaire included a section on key demographic characteristics such as schooling, current age, and marital status; a reproductive history module; and a section on maternal mortality.

Several reports and tabulations are available on the Federation of American Scientists website. The full report may be available through interlibrary loan.
