Summary

The Violence Against Children Study (VACS) is a global effort to collect data on violence against children. The study monitors the prevalence of domestic violence, sexual violence, emotional violence, and exploitation. VACS aims to inform prevention efforts and policy regarding child safety, monitor the utilization of health services, and estimate prevalence of violence agaisnt children.

Data for the 2012 Haiti VACS were collected through a household survey. The study successfully interviewed 1,457 females and 1,459 males between the ages of 13 to 24 years. The study split the sample into two age groups: participants 18 to 24 years and participants 13 to 17. The older group was canvassed for experiences of violent acts prior to age 18. The younger group was asked to recount experiences that had occurred in the 12 months preceding the survey. Internally displaced persons, living in camps as a result of the 2010 earthquake, were included in the sample in addition to permanent residents.
