Summary

This survey was the first national data collection effort exploring the tobacco and drug use of university students attending higher education institutions in the 27 state capitals. The purpose of this survey was to identify prevalence and patterns of use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among students enrolled in undergraduate courses in higher education settings.

The data were collected through timed self-completed questionnaires handed out in class. The use recall periods in the questionnaire were lifetime, the last 12 months, and the last 30 days. Beyond drug use, the questionnaire asked about sociodemographic characteristics, mental health symptoms, and sexual behavior. The questionnaire was distributed in 100 higher education institutions to 12,711 students.

Survey researchers also filled out a short program assessment form that investigated each institution's presence of prevention or counseling programs focused on the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco.
