The Health in Times of Transition: Trends in Population Health and Health Policies in CIS Countries (HITT-CIS) project collected and analyzed information about the health, health care, and lifestyles of nine countries in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. As part of the data collection, HITT-CIS included representative household surveys in all nine countries, with a total sample of 18,000 participants. Questionnaires focused on participants' health status, health care access and use, diet, tobacco and alcohol use, mental health, as well as social and political opinions.

HITT-CIS followed the Living Conditions, Lifestyles and Health (LLH) project, conducted in 2000-2003. HITT-CIS included all original LLH countries (Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine) with the addition of Azerbaijan.
