Summary

"Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care 2014" documents and analyzes direct and indirect maternal deaths that occurred in the United Kingdom and Ireland. From 2009 to 2012, 357 women died while pregnant or within 42 days of the termination of the pregnancy. This report reviews deaths from hemorrhage, amniotic fluid embolism, anaesthetic-related causes, neurological and other indirect causes. It focuses on the care of 203 women who died from these causes, as well as 34 women who survived septic shock. Tabulations provide sociodemographic characteristics, ages groups, and pre-existing medical conditions of the deceased women.

The Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) methodology has been utilized in England and Wales since 1952. In this process, a group of experts investigate all of the details pertaining to a maternal death. This is the first report to include analysis of maternal deaths in Ireland.
