Summary

This is part of the 2001 Annual Report of the National Birth Defect Prevention Network (NBDPN), published in a special issue of Teratology (Volume 64, Issue Supplement 1). The birth defects surveillance program data reports state-specific data from 30 participating population-based registries on prevalence numbers for 45 congenital anomalies from January 1, 1989 through December 31, 1998. Data are broken down by maternal age for trisomy 21 (commonly referred to as Down's syndrome), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13, but defects are not broken down by race/ethnicity as in previous reports. Collection of data on live births only, live and stillbirths, or all pregnancy outcomes differs by state. As with other annual reports, there is also an accompanying directory of state birth defects surveillance programs.
