Summary
Because of escalating traffic injuries and deaths in the Russian Federation, a review of road safety performance was conducted in the years 2004-2005. Acting on recommendations for improvements, the Road Safety Improvement Federal Targeted Program was implemented in 2006. This report represents a 2009 update to the original review, to monitor improvements and compare changes since the safety program was initiated. While there was a marked reduction in road traffic mortality in 2008 (down 13% since 2004), the number of accidents is still significant. The number of road traffic accidents reported in 2008 resulted in 29,936 deaths and 270,883 injuries.
