Nepal Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Study 2008-2009
General Info
The Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Study (MMMS) 2008-2009 examines the factors affecting maternal mortality in Nepal. The study took place in the following eight districts, chosen to represent different geographical and developmental regions of the country: Kailali, Rupandehi, Okhaldhunga, Surket, Jumla, Baglung, Rasuwa, and Sunsari. A community surveillance system was implemented in each district, to record maternal deaths and live births, and perform verbal autopsies. Other components of the study included: hospital maternal death review, an emergency obstetric care monitoring system, interviews with women who have had maternal complications in the past two years, assessments of health facilities, and interviews with health providers.
In 1998, the Ministry of Health conducted a MMMS in three of the above districts.
