Summary 

This survey was part of the People's Security Project, a survey series that explored a range of security topics in seventeen different countries. The survey was carried out in one rural and two urban areas. The rural area chosen was Matatiele in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. The urban areas chosen for this survey were Capetown and Durban in the Western Cape Province. A total of 2,099 people between the ages of 15 and 64 years were interviewed in their homes. The interview themes included household characteristics, living conditions, work and employment security, crime, community involvement, social justice.
