Summary

In 2010, a subgroup of 211 participants from the 2009 STEPS survey from Thai Nguyen province was randomly selected to participate in a follow-up study to examine the validity of spot-urine estimated 24-hour sodium excretion.

The survey included an interview and measurement of height, weight, and blood pressure. The study used the same instruments and questionnaire that had been used in the STEPS survey, except for blood tests. Spot urine samples were collected after overnight fasting. The following day, participants completed their 24-hour collections at their individual 24-hour time mark.

Sodium and creatinine concentrations in the urine samples were measured using an Ion Selective Electrode method.
