Summary
The Saving Mothers Report provides numbers and causes of maternal deaths in South Africa, as well as data on associated risk factors, including HIV infection. It covers 4,077 maternal deaths reported from 2005 to 2007. Most of these reported deaths occurred at health facilities; only a small percentage were recorded as home deaths. The report also contains tabulations on causes of death for 1999 to 2004. The Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) system began in South Africa in 1997. This is the fourth published report on CEMD since 1999.
