Summary:

The South Africa Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey 2017-2019 aimed to: (1) estimate the prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis disease at a national level among the adult population (15 years and older) of the Republic of South Africa and (2) identify the extent to which people with pre-existing tuberculosis or with symptoms suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis seek care.

Survey activities were done in 110 clusters across the country based on population proportionate cluster sampling (PPS). 68,771 people were enumerated with a total of 35,191 people participating (survey participation was 66.1%). The survey had four main stages: (1) stakeholder engagement; (2) pre-survey visit; (3) data collection of household census, screening and specimen collection, and laboratory testing; and (4) review of results.

The 2012 South Africa National HIV Prevalence, Incidence, and Behavior Survey is the fourth in a series of national population-based surveys conducted for surveillance of the HIV epidemic in South Africa. The previous surveys were conducted in 2002, 2005, and 2008. The survey was designed to investigate overall HIV prevalence and incidence, as well as HIV-related behavior and health. It enables the measurement of trends and changes in the epidemic over time, and presentation of essential data for national indicator reporting.

Data were collected with clinical measurements, interviews, focus groups, and observations. Four separate questionnaires were utilized: a household questionnaire, a questionnaire for parents/guardians of children ages 0-11, a questionnaire for children ages 12-14, and a questionnaire for persons ages 15 and above. 11,079 households agreed to participate and 38,431 individuals completed interviews. The survey excluded institutionalized persons.
