This dataset covers waves 0-8 of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, known as ELSA. Wave zero consists of 1998, 1999, and 2001 Health Survey of England (HSE) subsample selected to participate in ELSA. The ELSA sample is occasionally refreshed from HSE. ELSA provides data on health, social engagements, and the financial status of England residents ages 50 and over. In even number waves, health tests are conducted. Tests include standing and sitting, height, weight, waist and hip measurement, lung function, balance, leg raise, chair rise, grip strength, and a saliva log (cortisol test). Blood tests were conducted in waves two and four. Cognition tests are conducted at each wave.

The CCHS surveys individuals age 12 and over living in private dwellings in order to collect data on health surveillance and population health research. Excluded from the sampling frame are individuals living on reserves, institutional residents, full-time members of the Canadian Forces, children in foster care, and residents of certain remote regions. The CCHS covers approximately 97% of the Canadian population aged 12 and over.

Since 2007, CCHS has been an annual survey. Microdata are released annually, and every two years a file combining the full two-year sample is also released.

The 2015 Mexican Health and Aging Study was the fourth wave of data collection to be conducted as part of the survey effort. It was conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography via computer-assisted personal interviewing, and covered the following topics: health, socioeconomics, family background, children, income, housing, time use, and psychosocial characteristics.

The survey consisted of follow-up interviews with respondents ages 50 and older, and their respective spouses, who had completed one interview or more since the 2001 survey. Those who had been added to the 2012 sample but were not available to complete an interview at the time were contacted, as well. 

A next-of-kin interview on major events in the last year of life was included for respondents who were deceased. In total, 15,898 respondents completed full interviews from a nationally representative sample of 18,006.

The United States Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is a longitudinal cohort study that covers the health, retirement and aging of more than 22,000 Americans over the age of 50. Topics covered in the 2014 HRS survey include: physical and cognitive functioning, retirement plans, family structure, wealth transfers, demographic characteristics, housing, employment status, income, disability, health insurance, pension plans, job history, and attitudes, preferences, and expectations for the future.

The Puerto Rican Elderly: Health Conditions (PREHCO) project provides information on the health and wellbeing of adults ages 60 and over residing in the Puerto Rico. Originally conducted as a cross-sectional survey in 2002-2003, PREHCO became longitudinal with the introduction of wave 2, where wave 1 participants completed a follow-up survey. A proxy was interviewed for those wave 1 participants who were deceased or institutionalized at the time of the survey. For wave 2 of PREHCO, 3,891 respondents and 1,260 spouse interviews were successfully completed.
