The Welfare Monitoring Survey III was conducted in two phases in 1997. It samples 10,873 households drawn from the National Sample Survey and Evaluation Programme (NASSEP) III. The WMS III includes a module which uses the Core Welfare Indicators Questionnaire (CWIQ), but does not include a fertility module as in previous surveys--fertility is captured in more detail in the 1998 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey.

The Welfare Monitoring Survey II is the second such survey to have been conducted in Kenya. As a household survey, it captures household characteristics and employment, education, fertility, household economic issues, agriculture, consumption and expenditure patterns, and amenities. Additionally, the Fifth Child Nutrition Survey 1994 was incorporated into the Welfare Monitoring Survey II as a module, collecting survival and nutrition data on children aged 6 to 60 months old. It uses the National Sample Survey and Evaluation Programme (NASSEP) III sampling frame, and samples 10,860 households.

Summary: 

The purpose of this survey was to gather data to determine the impact of national programs on nutrition, population health, and education. This survey also sought to collect more information on the labor force. The 1988 round was the first time this survey was conducted in Jamaica.

The data were collected through multiple in-person interviews in the home. The interviewers first approached households with the household questionnaire. Then, approximately one month later, a subset of these households participated in a second interview on employment. This second survey is also known as the Labor Force Survey (LFS).

The sample size for this survey was 1,909 households.
