The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is an ongoing research survey designed to measure the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. Each year the survey examines a nationally representative sample of about 5,000 persons located in counties across the country. NHANES uses a combination of interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests to collect data; interviews include questions concerning demographics, diet, conditions, and health status information, while the examination component consists of medical, dental, and physiological measurements. Blood, urine, and other samples are collected for a variety of laboratory tests and are also saved for a national probability sample of genetic material.

The 2001-2002 NHANES included the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC), for sample persons ages 8-19.

The United States National Comorbidity Survey: Replication (NCS-R) 2001-2003 is a nationally representative household survey on the mental health of 9,282 noninstitutionalized persons, 18 years and older in the United States. Respondents were interviewed by trained personnel with modified versions of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and the Structured Clinical Interview (SCID) for DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). A subsample of 5692 respondents were asked additional questions on risk factors, and correlates associated with the mental health disorders. The NCS-R is released with the United States Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES) 2001-2003 and is part of the United States National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) series family.

The United States National Comorbidity Survey: Reinterview (NCS-2) 2001-2002 is a longitudinal follow-up survey to the United States National Comorbidity Survey: Baseline (NCS-1) 1990-1992. For the NCS-2, 5,001 NCS-1 respondents ages 15-54 were re-interviewed on topics that were covered in the NCS-1, such as the respondent's mental and physical health status, use of health care services, chronic illness, and use of prescription medications. The NCS-2 was conducted with modified versions of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and Structured Clinical Interview (SCID) for DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). Additionally, two personality tests were included in the NCS-2.
