Sweden Cause of Death Register

Series type
Vital registration
Geography
Time period
1952 - present

This system collects data on deaths by age, sex, cause, place of death, and municipality of residence. The National Board of Health and Welfare manages the Swedish Cause of Death Register (Dödsorsaksregistret).

Local registries receive death certificates and submit death data to the Cause of Death Register. The register does not include stillbirths or deaths of temporary visitors or asylum seekers in Sweden.

Registration of deaths began in 1749 and the country mandated the use of death certificates in 1860. Before 1948, the Table Commission (the predecessor to Statistics Sweden) collected death notifications from every parish. The Cause of Death Register currently offers mortality data dating back to 1961. It also has historical death records from 1952 to 1960.
