This system provides microdata for deaths by age, sex, cause and residence of the deceased. The Secretariat of Health Surveillance, Ministry of Health manages the Mortality Information System (SIM).
Death certificates are processed at the municipal level and reported data is transferred to a state-level database. The aggregated data in each state database is sent to the Secretariat of Health Surveillance, which analyzes and distributes death data.
The Mortality Information System (SIM) was established in 1975. Prior to the creation of SIM, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) was responsible for the collection and dissemination of mortality data in Brazil.
