Summary

The 1973 National Survey of Family Growth was based on a multistage probability sample of 9,797 women 15-44 years of age living in the coterminous United States who were either married, previously married, or who were never married but had offspring presently living in the household. The 1973 NFGS produced estimates concerning: factors affecting pregnancy (including sexual activity, contraceptive use, and infertility); the medical care associated with contraception, infertility, and childbirth; marriage and divorce; adoption and care of non-biological children; attitudes about sex, childbearing, and marriage.

The 1973 NSFG was the first cycle of the survey. Interviews were conducted in person by female interviewers.
