Summary 

NHAMCS is based on outpatient visits to physicians and hospital emergency rooms and is designed to collect data on the use of ambulatory care services.  Conducted in all fifty states and the District of Columbia, it is a national sample of noninstitutional general and short stay hospitals excluding federal, military and VA hospitals.
