Summary

The National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL) 1999-2001, like the earlier NATSAL I, was conducted to improve understanding of risk factors associated with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. NATSAL II included several additional modules and measured the prevalence of chlamydia trachomatis infection in urine samples collected from half of the participants.

Out of a sample of 12,100 adults, a total of 11,161 individuals ages 16-44 were successfully interviewed.

Topics covered in the survey included: basic sociodemographic characteristics, current relationships, health literacy, risk reduction behavior, sexual behavior, history of sexually transmitted diseases, and attitudes towards different sexual lifestyles.
