The 2011-2012 Tanzania AIS was conducted as part of Phase 6 of the DHS series. The total household sample size included 10,040 households. A total of 10,967 women ages 15-49 years and 8,352 men ages 15-59 years were included in the sample.

This survey covers both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Blood samples for HIV and malaria testing were taken from consenting male and female participants. Children ages 6-59 months were also tested for anemia and malaria.

Two questionnaires were used, one for households and one for individuals. The questions were based on Measure DHS AIDS Indicators Survey and Malaria Indicator Survey.
