Summary

The Sri Lanka 2012 Census of Population and Housing was the 14th conducted in the country, by the Department of Census and Statistics under the Ministry of Finance and Planning. It included several changes in the method of enumeration. Persons were allocated in de jure fashion for the first time, and usual residence was considered the place where a person has been living continuously for more than six months, or expects to stay for more than 6 months continuously. New questions were added to the enumeration form on migration, vocational qualifications, disability, computer use, and internet access. Scanning technology was introduced for the data collection process, and an effort was also made to enumerate the homeless population. The reference date for the 2012 census was March 20th, with a total population of 20,271,464.
