Summary

The Puerto Rico 1990 Census of population and housing was conducted in conjunction with the United States Decennial Census. It was done so through a combination of self-enumerating with mailback forms and personal interview, using both a short-form and long-form questionnaire. The short-form questionnaire was administered to all households and contained a limited number of basic population and housing questions. The long-form questionnaire was administered to select housing units selected from a sampling procedure, contained the full amount of items, and was completed through personal interview by enumerators. The forms for Puerto Rico included questions that also were designed to meet specific data needs of the territory, and the sampling rate required that one in every six units complete the long-form questionnaire. The total population for Puerto Rico in 1990 was 3,522,037 with the reference date of April 1.
