Summary

Censuses provide population numbers, household or family size and composition, and information on sex and age distribution. They often include other demographic, economic and health-related topics as well. The 1991 Portugal de jure census collected data through face-to-face interviews on the subjects of housing, household demographics, employment for those 12 and older, education, migration, and fertility for women 12 and older. The census day was April 15, 1991 and fieldwork was carried out from March to July 1991. Census coverage was 99.6% of buildings, 99.4% of dwellings, 99.2% households, and 99% of individuals. A 5% sample from the census (491,755 individuals) is available through IPUMS International at the University of Minnesota. The sample unit is dwellings for private dwellings and persons for collective dwellings. Refer to the IPUMS website for guidelines on citing database versions.
