Summary

Since 1985, India's National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) has carried out diet and nutritional assessment surveys of the tribal populations living in Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) project areas in several states. After a baseline survey conducted in 1985-1987, repeat surveys were carried out in 1998-1999 and 2007-2008.

In this second repeat survey, the prevalence of overweight/obesity and hypertension were assessed in addition to diet and nutritional status. Anthropometric measurements and morbidity histories were collected and clinical examinations performed on a total of 115,113 individuals from 40,359 households. Data on food and nutrient intake, blood pressure, and knowledge and practices related to hypertension and diabetes were also collected from a subset of the sampled population.
