Summary

Since 1985, India's National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) has carried out diet and nutritional assessment surveys of tribal populations living in Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) project areas in several states. After a baseline survey conducted in 1985-1987, repeat surveys were carried out in 1998-1999 and 2007-2008.

In this first repeat survey the prevalence of overweight/obesity and hypertension were assessed, in addition to diet and nutritional status. Anthropometric measurements were collected and clinical examinations were performed on a total of 90,995 individuals from 30,390 households. Data on food and nutrient intake were also collected from a subset of the sampled population.
