Summary

The Ghana Special Demographic and Health Survey 2007-2008, also called the Ghana Maternal Health Survey (GMHS), is part of phase 5 of the Demographic and Health Survey Series (DHS), a comprehensive, nationally representative household survey series. The Ghana Special DHS 2007-2008 provides information on topics relating to maternal health including: direct and indirect causes of maternal mortality, health care use, abortion and miscarriage, and health care access. The 2007-2008 Ghana Special DHS was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 of the survey was primarily used to list and identify households where the death of a female household member age 12-49 had occurred within five years prior to the survey. In phase 2 of the survey, 10,370 women ages 15-49 were successfully interviewed from 10,858 households. Verbal autopsy questionnaires were completed for 4,203 of the deceased women identified in phase 1 of the survey.
