Summary

This survey covered births between 13 and 19 October, 2003. In total, the sample included 15,378 children, 14,737 born in France and 641 in overseas departments and territories. Given multiple births, the sample included 15,108 women, 14,482 in France and 626 overseas. For each woman, information about delivery and the condition of the child at birth were collected from medical records. In addition, women were interviewed before leaving the hospital. The questionnaire included questions on the sociodemographic characteristics of parents, modalities and time to onset of pregnancy, prenatal care and screening conducted, accessibility of maternity care, childbirth, and the health status of children. In 2003 an additional document was completed by each of the 616 institutions surveyed. It includes information on the health care team, the organization of care for women, and the maternity environment.
