Summary

The ETOPO5 dataset comes from a digital database of land and sea floor elevation on a 5-minute latitude and longitude grid. The data were originally collected from various sources by Margo Edwards in 1988 while at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. A small area of Canada was re-gridded in 1990. Sources of the data include United States Naval Oceanographic Office, United States Defense Mapping Agency, Bureau of Mineral Resources, Australia, Department of Industrial and Scientific Research, New Zealand, and United States Navy Fleet Numerical Oceanographic Center.

The resolution of the data varies. Ocean floor, United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia data are gridded to a resolution of 5 minutes, while parts of Asia, South America, northern Canada, and Africa are gridded to 1 minute due to insufficient data.

The ETOPO5 dataset was superseded by the ETOPO1 Global Relief Model in 2009.
