The CCHS surveys individuals ages 12 and over living in private dwellings. Excluded from the sampling frame are individuals living on Indian Reserves and on Crown Lands, institutional residents, full time members of the Canadian Forces, and residents of certain remote regions. The CCHS covers approximately 98% of the Canadian population ages 12 and over.

In additional to annual components, Statcan releases a combined file every two years; this file combines the CCHS rounds for 2007 and 2008. This combined file does not include the year-specific modules for 2007 or 2008; the core content and theme content for the 2007-2008 period, as well as optional questions asked during this period, are included.
