Summary
Inpatient operation and procedure data are continuously collected by hospitals within the German Diagnosis-Related Group payment system. As of January 1, 2004, this includes all general hospitals in Germany. These data are encoded according to Germany's Operations and Procedures Code (OPS), which includes diagnostic procedures and imaging, surgery, non-surgical therapeutic measures, and additional measures. In 2009, approximately 17.2 million patients were discharged from inpatient treatment. There were approximately 45 million operations and medical procedures, an average of 2.6 per discharge.
