Summary
The Fertility and Family Surveys (FFS) were conducted in 23 United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Region countries from 1989 to 1999. The template survey includes 10 core and 4 optional modules. Topics include household characteristics, partnerships, fertility, and use of contraception. Each country developed a unique questionnaire derived from the standardized template. Sampling and data collection varied across the participating countries. In Switzerland, sampling was done on 2 levels, first drawn by 123 clusters, made up of 3,000 Swiss communes. Second, random selection was done by electronic telephone directory. A total of 3,903 females and 2,087 males between the age of 20 and 49 were interviewed in-person.
