General Info
The National Sample Survey (NSS) is a socioeconomic survey conducted in annual rounds with a cycle of rotating topics. The 55th Round (July 1999 to June 2000) included surveys on household consumer expenditure, employment and unemployment, and informal non-agricultural enterprises.
Sample sizes were as follows: 35,492 rural and 24316 urban households for the consumer expenditure survey, 97,986 rural and 67,258 urban for the employment survey, 6,048 villages and 4,124 urban blocks for the survey of non-agricultural enterprises. The surveys were representative at national and state levels, but select areas were excluded due to geographic remoteness.
