The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The interviewed sample for the 2005 NHIS consisted of 38,509 households, yielding 98,649 persons in 39,284 families.
The 2005 NHIS covered a wide variety of topics, such as family composition, socio-demographic characteristics, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, health conditions, health behaviors, physical activity. The survey included a Cancer Control Supplement that covered topics such as diet and nutrition, tobacco use, cancer screening, genetic testing, family history, and use of indoor tanning devices by children age 14-17 years.
