General Info
The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The 1997 sample consisted of 39,832 interviewed households, yielding 103,477 persons in 40,623 families.
The 1997 National Health Interview Survey introduced a redesigned core set of questionnaires, referred to as the basic module. The basic module featured a family core that collected information on all household members, while the sample adult and sample child questionnaires each collected information on randomly selected individuals. The new core of questionnaires covered a wide variety of topics, including household composition, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, conditions, health behaviors, physical activity, and immunizations.
